Islam's Holy Month Ramadan

2 May 2020

Ramadan is a period of worship to demonstrate spiritual thinking, gratitude, solidarity, empathy, awareness and commitment. The first verses of the Qur'an were sent in this period. It is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar (Hijri). In Ramadan, Muslims are more sensitive to solidarity and worship. In fact, it is the month of purification of the heart and body. It is time for spiritual discipline.

The most important point of this month is fasting. Fasting is one of the five basic conditions of Islam. Every adult should fast during the month of Ramadan, except for those with a health problem, traveling or pregnant. The days you can't fast, can be compensated later. Charity given by people who cannot fast is called fitr. The fasting is a process from dawn to sunset. It is forbidden to eat and drink anything during this process.

Sahur is a meal that is eaten to keep yourself full until iftar before dawn. Dishes that are not too heavy are preferred.

Iftar is the meal that you break your fast that day. It is the food eaten in a festive mood. On large iftar tables, people spend time with their families and share their meals. Delicious appetizers, salads, juices, traditional main dishes and desserts are indispensable at these tables. Mass meals are served in various places with the awareness of helping people and being together. Muslims from everywhere come together and eat their meals in the form of a banquet. This social responsibility strengthens sharing, gratitude and awareness.

Ramadan is the time to thank all the blessings, togetherness, to help and to be with family friends. It is one of the most special times for Muslims. There is a three-day holiday at the end of Ramadan. During the holiday, people visit each other, especially the elderly, meals are eaten, they have a pleasant time together.
